region, area, district

这三个词的共同意思是“地区”。其区别是：

area指较大的地区时侧重其“面积”,不指行政上的地理单位; region所表示的“地区”,指有地理界限或具有某种特色,自成一个单位的地区,一般是较大的行政单位,如我国的自治区(autonomous region); district所指的“地区”范围比region小,如“城区和郊区”一般译为“urban and rural districts”,此时不能用region,一个城市所划分的不同地区,也叫做district,不能用region或area。例如：

The area would become flooded after heavy rains.暴雨过后,这个地区将变为水灾区。

They live in a mountainous region.他们住在山区。

A person must vote in his or her own district.不论男女,在他们的所在地区都有选举权。

这些名词均有“地区”之意。

district多指由等机构出于行政管理等目的而明确划分的地区。

region常指地球上、大气中具有自然分界线的区域，特指按照气候、人体或其他特征鲜明、自成一体的地区。

area普通用词，指整体中较大的，界线不分明的一部分。

section指城市、国家或天然界线形成的地区。

zone科技用词，指圆形或弧形地带，尤指地图上按温度划分的五个地带。用作一般意义时，也可指具有某种特征的其它地区。

belt从本义“带，带状物”引申而指任何广阔的长条地带，也可指种植某种作物的地区。

quarter指城市里具有相同性质或独特风味的地区，比section范围小，但划分更精确。

neighbourhood指比section的划定更清楚，范围更小。具体指城市中的住宅区，也可指附近一带。
